Norway plans to build the world’s first ship tunnel

That’s a bold plan

Norway wants to solve the problem of one of the most hazardous shipping route.

The route that passes around the country's Stad peninsula is often affected by harsh weather that delays ships. Now, an ambitious plan wants to solve this problem by building a ship tunnel directly through the peninsula.

If the project will go ahead, the Stad Ship Tunnel will have a length of 1.7 km and measure 37m tall and 26.5m wide. The price of the project is expected to be 2.3 billion NOK (over $272 million).

The first renders of the project are by the architecture and design firm Snøhetta. The tunnel will handle about 19 ships a day, but it will be built for a capacity of 100 ships a day. The traffic will be one-way with the direction alternated every hour.
