Update: Menace is her middle name
It's not a ship sent from the future to save us from the rise of Skynet, but it's the newest addition to the US Navy.
The destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) it's the first ship of the Zumwalt class. The class will eventually incorporate three vessels.
The new ship has stealth capabilities, having a radar cross-section similar to that of a fishing boat despite her impressive size. She is 600 feet long (183 m).
The warship is named after Admiral Elmo Russel Zumwalt Jr, Chief of Naval Operations. He played an important role during the Vietnam War.
Crewed by 147 sailors, Zumwalt is the lead ship of a class of next-generation multi-mission destroyers designed to strengthen naval power. They are capable of performing critical maritime missions and enhance the Navy's ability to provide deterrence, power projection and sea control.
And it is only fitting that her commanding officer is named James Kirk. Star Trek fans will know the reference.
DDG 1000 will be the first U.S. Navy combatant surface ship to utilize an integrated power system (IPS) to provide electric power for propulsion and ship services. The IPS generates approximately 78 megawatts of power, nearly what a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier generates, to meet the total ship electric power requirements and provide extra capacity to accommodate future weapons and computing systems.
Power is provided by two Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines driving Curtiss-Wright electric generators and another two Rolls-Royce RR450 turbine generators. The two propellers are turned by electric motors, and the ship can reach a speed of 33.5 knots.
She is also heavily armed with 80 vertical missile launchers, two 155 mm AGS cannons and two Mk 110 57 mm anti-missile/anti-aircraft guns.
